  • Yonny Chirinos: Cast aside by Atlanta

Chirinos (elbow) was non-tendered by Atlanta on Friday, MLB.com reports. He didn't pitch after Aug. 19 due to elbow inflammation. Chirinos tallied a 5.40 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 53 strikeouts in 85 innings while splitting time between Atlanta and the Rays in 2023.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Exits 40-man roster

Chirinos (elbow) was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Tuesday. The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver claim Penn Murfee. Chirinos had seemed likely to be non-tendered, anyway, after posting a 5.40 ERA over 20 appearances for Tampa Bay and Atlanta in 2023. He ended the season on the 60-day injured list with an elbow problem and it's not clear what his current health status is.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Moved to 60-day IL

Atlanta transferred Chirinos (elbow) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list Tuesday. Chirinos is done for the remainder of the regular season due to a right elbow injury. It was initially labeled as inflammation but might be more serious than that. The 29-year-old surrendered 23 earned runs in 22.1 major-league innings (five starts) with the NL East leaders in 2023 and could be a non-tender candidate this winter.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Placed on IL with elbow injury

Atlanta placed Chirinos on the 15-day injured list Monday with right elbow inflammation. Chirinos seemingly had been set to lose his rotation spot due to performance, but instead he'll go on the IL and will be sidelined at least until early September. Allan Winans was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move and will replace Chirinos in the rotation beginning with Monday's game against the Mets.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Middling effort against Giants

Chirinos didn't factor into the decision in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Giants, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over four innings while striking out four. After giving up six runs in both of his last two starts, Chirinos showed modest improvement Saturday by surrendering only four runs. Since being acquired by Atlanta on July 23, Chirinos owns an ugly 9.27 ERA and 22:7 K:BB and has yet to go deeper than five innings in any of his outings. He's tentatively scheduled for a rematch with the Giants in San Francisco for his next start next weekend, though it's possible his spot in the rotation could be in jeopardy.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Hammered by Mets

Chirinos (5-5) allowed six runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.2 innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Mets. Chirinos held the Mets to one run through four frames before they broke out in the fifth inning. He was charged with six runs for the second straight outing, driving his ERA up to 5.22 through 81 frames. Over his last nine starts, Chirinos has registered a brutal 8.05 ERA. His next appearance is projected to be at home against the Giants.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Blasted by Bucs

Chirinos escaped with a no-decision Tuesday in Atlanta's 8-6 win over the Pirates, surrendering six runs on seven hits -- including four home runs -- over five innings. He struck out five. A Ke'Bryan Hayes three-run blast in the first inning set the tone for Chirinos' night, but Atlanta rallied in the ninth to take the right-hander off the hook for his fifth loss of the year. He's mostly been a disaster so far for the NL East leaders since being claimed off waivers from the Rays, lurching to an 8.56 ERA, 1.68 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB through 13.2 innings over three starts, and it's no coincidence that AJ Smith-Shawver is on the same schedule as Chirinos as Triple-A. The 20-year-old struck out seven without walking a batter in a six-inning quality start for Gwinnett on Tuesday, and Atlanta could call him back up to fill the fifth starter role -- bumping Chirinos to the bullpen, or perhaps even back to the waiver wire -- as soon as this weekend's road series against the Mets.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Season-high five strikeouts in win

Chirinos (1-0) earned the win Wednesday, allowing three runs on six hits and one walk over five innings against the Angels while striking out five. After striking out Shohei Ohtani to open the bottom of the fourth, Chirinos allowed a single and a walk to the next two batters, which would eventually lead to the Angels' first run coming home. The right-hander was then relieved by Michael Tonkin in the sixth after allowing back-to-back to singles to open the frame, but not before racking up a season-high five strikeouts on the afternoon. It marked Chirinos' first win with his new club, though he's now given three or more runs in each of his last three starts.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Remains in rotation

Chirinos is scheduled to start Wednesday's game against the Angels at Truist Park, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. He'll go head-to-head with the Angels' Lucas Giolito as both pitchers make their second starts for their new teams. In his Atlanta debut this past Friday against the Brewers, Chirinos lasted just 3.2 innings while giving up four runs on six hits and one walk, but he induced 10 swinging strikes on 61 pitches, good for a season-best 16.4 percent rate.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Escapes with no-decision

Chirinos came away with a no-decision in Atlanta's 10-7 win over the Brewers on Friday, giving up four runs on six hits and a walk over 3.2 innings. He struck out three. Making his Atlanta debut after being claimed off waivers from the Rays last weekend, Chirinos did little to discourage his new club from trying to add more rotation depth at the trade deadline. The 29-year-old right-hander has a 4.34 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 34:21 K:BB through 66.1 innings on the season, and he could find himself bumped to the bullpen or even off the big-league roster when Max Fried (forearm) is ready to return.

  • Braves' Yonny Chirinos: Set to work as starter

Chirinos will serve as a starter for Atlanta, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Chirinos was claimed off waivers by Atlanta on Sunday, and the team sent Michael Soroka to the minors as part of a corresponding move. Max Fried (forearm) will also make another rehab start this week, so Chirinos will have an opportunity to showcase his skills as a starter. The right-hander made 15 appearances (four starts) for the Rays earlier this year and posted a 4.02 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in 62.2 innings.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Dropped from 40-man roster

The Rays designated Chirinos for assignment Monday, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports. Tampa Bay had been treating Chirinos as its de facto No. 5 starter heading into the All-Star break, but the right-hander was summoned in long relief of starter Zach Eflin during Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Royals and proceeded to give up three earned runs on four hits -- including three home runs -- in 4.2 innings. Due to his 50-pitch workload, Chirinos wasn't likely to be available for at least a few games, and his lack of freshness and poor peripherals on the season (5.31 SIERA, 4.2 K-BB%) provided enough reason for Tampa Bay to remove him from its 40-man roster. The Rays reinstated lefty Shane McClanahan (back) from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Takes loss in relief

Chirinos dropped to 4-4 after allowing three earned runs on eight hits and no walks while striking out one across 2.2 innings in Wednesday's 8-4 loss to the Phillies. Of the eight hits Chirinos allowed, four went for extra bases. After a successful start to his stint in the majors beginning June 8, he has now allowed 15 earned runs across his last 18.2 innings. The Rays may need to continue to get creative with their rotation due to the number of injuries they're currently dealing with, but Chirinos hasn't been a solution of late.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Working in bulk relief once again

Chirinos is slated to work as a bulk reliever behind opener Zack Littell in Wednesday's home game versus the Phillies, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Littell and Chirinos worked in tandem successfully during Chirinos' most recent turn through the rotation last Thursday against the Diamondbacks, so manager Kevin Cash will stick with the arrangement once again this week. After Littell tossed two scoreless frames in Arizona, Chirinos came on to pick up the win while striking out four and allowing one earned run on four hits and three walks over six innings out of the bullpen.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Earns win in bulk role

Chirinos (4-3) earned the win in Thursday's 6-1 victory over the Diamondbacks. He allowed a run on seven hits and three walks while striking out four over six innings. After Zack Littell opened the game with two scoreless innings, Chirinos delivered six strong frames out of the bullpen, allowing just one run on a Lourdes Gurriel homer. It was an encouraging effort from the 29-year-old Chirinos after he was tagged for eight runs in his last outing against the Royals. Chirinos lowered his ERA to 3.64 with a 1.20 WHIP and 27:19 K:BB through 54.1 innings this season.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Handed second loss

Chirinos (3-2) took the loss Sunday versus the Padres, allowing five runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings. Chirinos made his third start of the year but wasn't able to replicate his success from his previous outing. The right-hander didn't get help from his defense Sunday, and he needed 90 pitches (52 strikes) to get 14 outs. He's now at a 2.72 ERA, 1.02 WHIP And 20:14 K:BB through 43 innings over 10 appearances. Chirinos has occasionally worked behind an opener this season, which would likely help him qualify for more wins. He's projected to make his next appearance at home versus the Royals in a favorable matchup.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Confirmed for start Sunday

Chirinos will start Sunday's game against San Diego, Kristie Ackert of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Chirinos will get the ball after throwing 3.2 scoreless innings versus Oakland on Tuesday. The right-hander will get a chance to pick up a win and a few extra innings while not working behind an opener for Sunday's series finale against the Padres.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Solid in win

Chirinos (3-1) earned the win Thursday, allowing one run on five hits over 5.2 innings against Minnesota. He struck out four and did not walk a batter. Chirinos was steady over 5.2 innings with the exception of a leadoff homer he surrendered to Carlos Correa in the fourth after hanging a slider in the middle of the zone. He followed up that mistake with back-to-back strikeouts and would allow only one more hitter to reach base before being relieved by Jake Diekman in the sixth. The right-hander posted a season-high four strikeouts and did not walk a batter for the first time since April 29. With Josh Fleming on the injured list (elbow), it wouldn't be surprising if Chirinos sticks around in the Rays' rotation for the time being, especially given his impressive outing against Minnesota.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Recalled, will start Thursday

The Rays recalled Chirinos from Triple-A Durham, and he'll start Thursday's series finale against the Twins at Tropicana Field, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. With the Rays opting to push Tyler Glasnow back a day in the pitching schedule, Chirinos will fill the hole in the team's rotation. The right-hander has put up a 2.79 ERA over 29 innings with the big club this season, although the ERA has also come along with an 11:11 K:BB.

  • Rays' Yonny Chirinos: Back in win column Tuesday

Chirinos (2-1) got the win over the Mets on Tuesday, allowing three runs on three hits and a walk while striking out two over 4.2 innings. Chirinos qualified for the win after Jalen Beeks pitched two scoreless innings and handed the ball off to Chirinos in the third. Two of the three hits he gave up were home runs. Brett Baty took him deep in the fifth and then Pete Alonso crushed a two-run blast in the seventh. Chirinos has mostly been used as a bulk reliever this season and overall, he has been successful in that role. He has an unsightly 11:11 K:BB but owns a respectable 2.79 ERA and 0.97 WHIP across 29 innings.
