Soroka finished the 2023 season on the 60-day injured list with right forearm inflammation and missed all of 2021-22 due to consecutive Achilles tears, but he should be able to enjoy a normal offseason and will likely be in the running for an Opening Day rotation spot with the White Sox in 2024. Chicago acquired the 26-year-old right-hander from Atlanta last week as part of a six-player trade.

White Sox general manager Chris Getz said Friday that he expects one or both of Soroka (forearm) and Jared Shuster to open 2024 in the rotation, Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com reports.
Both players were acquired from Atlanta on Thursday in a deal which sent reliever Aaron Bummer the other way. The White Sox' rotation looks like one of the easiest to crack right now and the path would be further cleared if Dylan Cease is traded. Getz did note that he plans to acquire additional pitching help this winter, but Soroka has an early leg up for a spot as he tries to reestablish himself in his new surroundings. We going to do this again? After waiting more than three years for him to return from a twice-torn Achilles, we got nothing but disappointment from Soroka when he came back about a month ago. He's since gone back to the minors and looked great in three starts, most recently coming within an out of a seven-inning no-hitter. He struck out nine in the contest and registered 18 swinging strikes. But that's the weird part. The Soroka we knew long ago used a sinker to get ground-ball outs. Now he's relying more on a four-seamer and getting whiffs. Maybe it'll be for the better, but we obviously can't rely on any of our preconceptions when the transformation is so significant. The expectation is that he'll be coming up to start Friday's game, so if you're a believer, go for it.
