Wisdom avoided arbitration Friday with the Cubs on a one-year, $2.725 million contract, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports. Wisdom isn't a perfect player, but he hit 23 home runs over 97 games in 2023 and carries a .474 slugging percentage over the last three seasons. He'll again be a dangerous bench bat and corner-infield platoon option for Chicago in 2024.... See More ... See Less

Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Goes deep in win
Wisdom went 1-for-5 with a solo home run in Saturday's win over the Brewers. Wisdom also struck out twice in the contest, making this game a good representation of what the 32-year-old brings to the plate. He's batting .205 this season and has struck out nearly 37 percent of the time. Wisdom has struck out at least 34 percent of the time each of the last three seasons. His inability to make consistent contact limits his fantasy upside moving forward, as he seems ticketed for a part-time role where he provides some pop but little else.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Provides boost Sunday
Wisdom went 1-for-2 with a walk and a two-run home run in Sunday's 4-3 win over the Rockies. Wisdom helped the Cubs overcome a 3-1 deficit during a three-run sixth inning, with his 22nd home run of the season serving as the big blow. It was the 32-year-old's first long ball this month, however, as he's slipped into a bench role in Chicago, though playing time is available in the short term for however long Jeimer Candelario (back) and Nick Madrigal (hamstring) are out.... Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Hits 21st home run Monday
Wisdom went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Brewers. Appearing in a game for just the fourth time in the last two weeks, Wisdom managed his 21st home run of the season. His career high is 28, though he seems unlikely to reach that number in his smaller role, which has been the result of Jeimer Candelario joining the team at the trade deadline. Wisdom can still provide some pop, but his fantasy appeal is diminished as a bench player.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Blasts 20th homer in loss
Wisdom went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 11-4 loss against Toronto. Sunday's game was a microcosm of Wisdom's season, as he paired his 20th home run with three more strikeouts to raise his season total to 99 in 224 at-bats. Wisdom's role has diminished since the trade deadline acquisition of Jeimer Candelario having now started just four games since Aug. 1. Wisdom's empty power production is best served in the part-time role in which the Cubs currently have him placed.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Hits 16th home run
Wisdom went 1-for-3 with a walk and a two-run home run in Monday's loss to the Nationals. Wisdom batted ninth but still managed to provide some offense for the Cubs. His lineup placement is likely due to his weak .194 batting average. Wisdom has struggled even more since the beginning of June, going just 5-for-41 (.122) with 22 strikeouts across 16 games. He did miss some time with a wrist sprain, so perhaps he's still trying to find his groove, though Wisdom did bat only .207 last season and isn't known for maintaining a high average.... See More ... Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Out of lineup Sunday
Wisdom is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Wisdom smacked a home run Saturday, his 15th of the year, but he'll give way to Miles Mastrobuoni on Sunday. Wisdom should still start at the hot corner most days moving forward, especially with Nick Madrigal (hamstring) on the injured list.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Sitting out Friday
Wisdom is not in the lineup for Friday's game versus the Red Sox, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. The Cubs will go with Miles Mastrobuoni at third base instead. Wisdom had started three of the last four games at the hot corner prior to the All-Star break, but his hold on the third base job seems pretty tenuous.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Activated from injured list
The Cubs activated Wisdom (wrist) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports. Wisdom is not in the starting lineup Tuesday versus the Brewers, but he's recovered from the sprained right wrist that sent him to the IL in mid-June and could see semi-regular action at third base with Nick Madrigal (hamstring) needing an IL stint of his own.... Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Set for rehab assignment
Wisdom (wrist) was cleared Wednesday to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Wisdom had been struggling mightily at the plate before he landed on the injured list June 17 due to a sprained right wrist, so the Cubs might ask him to remain with Iowa through the weekend in an effort to get his timing back. Nick Madrigal continues to draw the majority of playing time at third base for Chicago.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Lands on IL
The Cubs placed Wisdom on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a sprained right wrist, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Wisdom has been struggling at the plate recently, going just 2-for-24 since the beginning of June. Now, he will be shelved for at least 10 days as he nurses his right wrist. Justin Steele (forearm) was activated off the 15-day injured list Saturday and will replace Wisdom on the active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: On bench again
Wisdom is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Pirates, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports. Wisdom has started just one of the last four games and that was at designated hitter, as it seems he might have lost the third base job to Nick Madrigal. The 31-year-old has just a .552 OPS along with a 43.3 percent strikeout rate since May 1.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Not in Saturday's lineup
Wisdom will be on the bench for Saturday's game against the Giants. Wisdom's game always involves plenty of power alongside huge strikeout concerns, but it's the latter which has been more prevalent recently. He hit .250 with 10 homers through the end of April despite a 33.3 percent strikeout rate, but things have gone significantly downhill since then. In 29 games since the start of May, he's homered four times while hitting .149 with a 43.0 percent strikeout rate. Nick Madrigal will take over at third base Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: On bench Wednesday
Wisdom is not in the lineup Wednesday against the Angels. Miles Mastrobuoni will start at third base and bat ninth versus the Halos and right-hander Jaime Barria. Wisdom is slashing just .145/.245/.313 in 95 plate appearances since the beginning of May.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Sitting in series opener
Wisdom is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rays. Wisdom started at third base in both of the final two games of the Cubs' series with the Reds this past weekend, going 3-for-6 with a pair of home runs, five RBI, one walk and an additional run. The big finish to the week ended a 2-for-28 skid over the previous nine games, during which Wisdom struck out a whopping 18 times. Miles Mastrobuoni will get a look at the hot corner Monday, and though Wisdom still appears to be the Cubs' preferred option at the position, his tendency to run hot and cold at the plate likely won't give him much job security.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Goes deep twice
Wisdom went 2-for-3 with a pair of home runs, a walk and five RBI in Sunday's 8-5 loss to the Reds. Wisdom drove in all five runs for the Cubs after hitting a home run in the second and then another in the eighth. Sunday was just his second multi-hit game this month and his first long ball since May 10. He had been held out of the lineup two of the previous three times the Cubs had faced a righty and will likely need to bring his strikeouts down before he can be considered as a regular fixture again. The 31-year-old is now slashing .225/.316/.556 with 14 homers, 28 RBI, 28 runs and a 19:65 BB:K over 172 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: On bench again
Wisdom is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest versus the Reds. Wisdom has one hit in his last 21 at-bats, striking out 14 times with no walks during that span. This will be the third time in the last five games that he's been on the bench in favor of Miles Mastrobuoni, who will get another start at third base.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: On bench amid slump
Wisdom is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mets. Wisdom was among the most productive hitters in baseball in April, but he's slashed just .163/.293/.327 across 59 plate appearances since the calendar flipped to May. Miles Mastrobuoni will handle third base and bat second Wednesday versus New York. Christopher Morel is serving as the DH and hitting seventh.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Breather Sunday
Wisdom is not in the starting lineup Sunday versus Philadelphia. Wisdom will get a day off after he's gone 1-for-11 with a double and eight strikeouts over the last three games. Miles Mastrobuoni will draw the start at the hot corner and bat eighth in the series finale with the Phillies.... See More ... See Less -
Cubs' Patrick Wisdom: Out of lineup
Wisdom will sit Saturday against the Twins. Wisdom finds himself on the bench for the fourth time in the last seven games, with Nick Madrigal replacing him at third base on each of those occasions. Wisdom still owns an excellent .248/.348/.607 season slash line, while Madrigal is slashing just .254/.293/.324, so there's seemingly every chance Wisdom claws back a larger share of the role soon....
