Stubbs avoided arbitration Friday with the Phillies on a one-year contract. Stubbs slashed just .204/.274/.283 over 41 regular-season games in 2023 and drew only one postseason plate appearance, but the backup catcher figures to return to that role behind J.T. Realmuto in 2024.... See More ... See Less

Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Notches steal Sunday
Stubbs went 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI, a stolen base and two runs scored in Sunday's 9-1 win over the Mets. Stubbs got into just seven games after the start of September, serving as backup to workhorse catcher J.T. Realmuto. The multi-hit effort Sunday was just the second such game for Stubbs all season. He slashed .204/.274/.283 with one home run, 12 RBI, 15 runs scored and two stolen bases across 125 plate appearances. Stubbs will likely see minimal playing time in the postseason.... See More ... Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Filling in for banged-up Realmuto
Stubbs will start at catcher and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Marlins. He'll pick up a second consecutive start in place of J.T. Realmuto, who is nursing a hand injury after getting spiked by a Marlins player in Monday's 4-2 win. The Phillies haven't suggested that Realmuto is at risk of landing on the 10-day injured list, so Stubbs may not be in line for an extended run as the team's No. 1 backstop. Despite being on the active roster all season, Stubbs enters Tuesday's contest with just 70 plate appearances to his name while Realmuto has been one of the majors' more heavily-used catchers.... Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Picks up rare start
Stubbs will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks. With top backstop J.T. Realmuto receiving a breather for the day game after a night game, Stubbs will crack the starting nine for just the eighth time in 49 contests on the season. Stubbs, who owns a .588 OPS over 30 plate appearances in 2023, will likely remain one of MLB's most lightly used backup catchers so long as Realmuto is healthy.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Works behind plate Saturday
Stubbs went 0-for-1 and caught an inning behind the plate in Saturday's 16-3 loss to the Rangers. Stubbs' status for Opening Day initially appeared to be in some doubt after he experienced right knee irritation earlier in March during a stint with Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic, but he was able to erase any concerns about his health by catching six innings in the Phillies' exhibition finale last Tuesday. He ended up making his season debut Saturday, but that was only because starting catcher J.T. Realmuto was pulled from the game early due to the Phillies trailing by 10 runs.... See More ... Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Back in spring lineup
Stubbs (knee) will serve as the Phillies' designated hitter and leadoff man in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles. Stubbs (knee) will make his first appearance in the spring lineup since March 4, after he was briefly shut down when a right knee injury cropped up earlier this month while he was working out with Team Israel for the World Baseball Classic. The 29-year-old will look to make up for the lost at-bats by likely playing most of Sunday's game at DH, but the Phillies will presumably want to have him play behind the plate at least once before the end of spring training to feel confident in his ability to handle the No. 2 catcher role behind J.T. Realmuto.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Takes batting practice
Stubbs (knee) took batting practice Thursday morning, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Stubbs still hasn't appeared in a Grapefruit League game since he had to bow out of the World Baseball Classic with a mild right knee sprain, but the 29-year-old catcher is fully expected to be ready to serve as J.T. Realmuto's backup come Opening Day.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Expects to be ready for season
Stubbs (knee) said Thursday that he expects to be ready for Opening Day, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Stubbs had to bow out of a stint with Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic with what has since been diagnosed as a mild right knee sprain. He has exactly two weeks to get healthy in preparation for filling the backup catcher role behind J.T. Realmuto in Philly.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: To undergo imaging on knee
Phillies manager Rob Thomson said Tuesday that Stubbs will undergo imaging tests on his right knee, Scott Lauber of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Stubbs began experiencing right knee irritation while playing for Team Israel in the World Baseball Classic and has since bowed out of the tournament. Thomson said it doesn't seem to be anything overly concerning, but the Phillies want to know exactly what they're dealing with as they welcome the 29-year-old catcher back to spring camp.... Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Out of WBC due to sore knee
Stubbs (knee) has been removed from Team Israel's roster in the World Baseball Classic, Noah Berger of Fish Stripes reports. His younger brother, Astros minor-league catcher C.J. Stubbs, will fill the roster vacancy. The elder Stubbs has been dealing with knee discomfort and is headed back to Phillies camp for treatment. He's slated to again serve as the primary backup to J.T. Realmuto for the reigning NL champs, but this knee issue might alter that plan if it lingers much longer.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Tending to sore knee
Stubbs is dealing with knee discomfort and won't be available Monday for Team Israel in its World Baseball Classic game against Team Puerto Rico, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. After informing the Phillies of Stubbs' injury, Team Israel manager Ian Kinsler said that the two sides made the decision to hold the catcher out Monday as a precaution. Stubbs' injury isn't believed to be anything significant, and he could still be available for any World Baseball Classic games that Team Israel plays later this week. The 29-year-old is slated to open the regular season as the top backup catcher in Philadelphia behind starter J.T. Realmuto.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Gets second straight start
Stubbs will start at catcher and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Astros. With J.T. Realmuto handling designated-hitter duties in the regular-season finale, Stubbs will get the chance to make his second straight start behind the dish. Stubbs broke out of an 0-for-9 slump in Tuesday's 10-0 loss, going 1-for-2 with a walk.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Tallies two hits Sunday
Stubbs went 2-for-4 with a solo homer, two runs and a strikeout during Sunday's 4-3 loss to the Cubs. The 29-year-old drew his first start since July 13 during Sunday's matchup since J.T. Realmuto was resting, and he brought the Phillies within one run by homering in the bottom of the eighth inning. Stubbs has appeared in just nine games since the start of July and has gone 4-for-19 with a homer, four runs, an RBI, a stolen base and four strikeouts.... See More ... See Less -
Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Walkoff blast Wednesday
Stubbs went 2-for-3 with a walk and a three-run home run in Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Marlins. With the Phillies in danger of not only losing but being shut out, Stubbs rode to the rescue with a walkoff blast against current Miami closer Tanner Scott in the ninth inning. Stubbs doesn't see much action behind J.T. Realmuto, but he's making an impact when he is in the lineup, batting .342 (13-for-38) on the year with three homers and nine RBI.... See More ... Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Pops second homer
Stubbs went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 8-6 loss to the Mets. The backstop took Chasen Shreve deep in the sixth inning as the Phillies tried unsuccessfully to climb out of an early 7-0 hole. Stubbs has made the most of his infrequent opportunities backing up J.T. Realmuto, batting .379 (11-for-29) in 11 games while recording two homers, four runs, six RBI and a steal.... See More ... Phillies' Garrett Stubbs: Rare start with Realmuto resting
Stubbs will start at catcher and bat ninth Wednesday against the Rockies, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Stubbs will be making just his fifth appearance of the season through the Phillies' first 19 games, as top backstop J.T. Realmuto has shouldered one of the heaviest workloads among all MLB catchers thus far in April. The Phillies will finally extend Realmuto a breather after 10 consecutive turns behind the dish, allowing Stubbs to pick up his first start since April 15.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Garrett Stubbs: Joins World Series roster
Stubbs was added to the Astros' World Series roster Saturday, Jake Kaplan of The Athletic reports. Stubbs will replace Jason Castro, who had to be removed from the roster due to COVID-19 protocols. He's likely to be limited to a bench role behind Martin Maldonado.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Garrett Stubbs: X-rays return negative
Stubbs (hand) threw and hit Monday after having X-rays come back negative, Danielle Lerner of the Houston Chronicle reports. Stubbs was hit by a foul tip on the right hand while catching a batting practice session Sunday, but the injury doesn't appear to be of any concern given he's already back on the field. The 28-year-old is on the Astros' taxi squad and should remain there unless Martin Maldonado or Jason Castro go down with an injury.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Garrett Stubbs: Picks up hand injury
Stubbs was hit by a foul tip on the right hand while catching a live batting practice session Sunday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports. Stubbs isn't on the ALCS roster but is with the team as a member of the taxi squad, and he left the field with athletic trainers after being hit by the foul tip. The Astros could end up adding another catcher to the taxi squad if Stubbs is unavailable for any period of time.... See More ... See Less -
Astros' Garrett Stubbs: Dropped from roster for ALCS
Stubbs was left off the Astros' ALCS roster. Stubbs provided the Astros with some injury insurance in the ALDS as the team's third catcher, but he didn't get into a game. With a longer, seven-game series against the Red Sox on tap, the Astros elected to go with an extra reliever and could no longer afford the luxury of a third backstop.... See More ... See Less
